William "Sonny" Dean Whitaker, a beloved truck driver and cherished member of his community, passed away on May 16, 2025, in Amory, Mississippi, at the age of 81. Born on July 9, 1943, in Hamilton, Mississippi to Clarence and Viola (Hawkins) Whitaker. Sonny lived a life dedicated to his family and faith. He was a proud and devoted husband to Marie Whitaker (Golden), with whom he shared an incredible journey for 59 years.
Sonny's professional life was marked by his work as a self-employed truck driver, a career that likely reflected his love for the open road and freedom it brought him. Outside of his professional endeavors, Sonny found joy in various hobbies, including yardwork, spending time with his dogs, and leisurely riding his golf cart. He was known for his caring nature and his ability to find pleasure in simple joys.
He was a devoted member of Forward Church in Amory, Mississippi, where he contributed to his community and nurtured his spiritual life. Sonny's proudest accomplishments were his family, who will remember him fondly and carry on his legacy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marie; his daughter, Donna Whitaker Smith (Marty); his son, Michael Dean Whitaker; his sister, Sarah Mattison (Winford); and his brother, Jerry Whitaker (Linda). Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Whitaker and Viola (Hawkins) Whitaker, along with his sisters, Ola Mae Smith, Frances Stokes, and Shirley Whitlock.
Sonny’s presence will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who are grateful for the years they shared with him. A visitation will be held on May 18, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory, followed by a graveside service at Greenbriar Cemetery in Becker, Mississippi, starting at 2:00 PM with Bro. Greg Huguley officiating. Pallbearers will be Marty Smith, Rick Stoddard, Dustin Ball, Gunner Loftin, Ronald Junior Welch, and Brian Duffy.
