Vera Lucille Taylor Sugg

Amory – Vera Lucille Taylor Sugg, 87, of Amory, MS, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2025. She was the daughter of J.C. and Alice Taylor of Oxford, MS who preceded her in death as did her husband of 58 years, Joe Sugg and her youngest sister, Barbara Malone. She is survived by sons, Chris Sugg (Dixie) of Amory and Brian Sugg (Amanda) of Corinth; sister, Linda Jo. Templeton (Larry), Starkville; brother-in-law, Aubrey Malone of Laurel, MS; grandsons, Christopher Sugg and Andrew Sugg; granddaughter, Brooke Latch; and great granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Latch; nephews, Stephen Nichols and Julian Malone; and niece, Nicole Comer.

Vera was born on January 7, 1938, in Paris, Mississippi. Her earliest years were spent in Water Valley, Mississippi until the summer of 1951, when the family moved to China Grove Plantation, Humphreys County deep in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. She attended her junior high years at Silver City School and graduated from Belzoni High School in 1956 as the Valedictorian of her class. She attended Mississippi Delta Community College until she met and married Joe Sugg in 1957. Joe was a flight mechanic in the Air Force stationed in Bryan, Texas, which is where they made their first home and where their eldest son, Chris, was born. She attended and graduated from Cosmetology School in Bryan before they returned to Mississippi to make their home in Holly Bluff. Their youngest son, Brian, was born in Yazoo city while they lived in Holly Bluff.

In 1973, the family made their move to Hatley. Vera’s first job at a beauty solon was at Ruth’s in Amory and later became the co-owner of Hair Patterns on Main Street downtown Amory with her special and dear friend Betty Jane Cruber. She dearly loved her work and so enjoyed the friendships made with all her clients. She retired in July of 2022.

Vera loved to cook and spent many happy hours preparing special birthday meals for her family. Her extended family always looked forward to spending Thanksgiving at the Sugg home and if you were ever the recipient of her delicious chocolate toffee at Christmas, you were truly lucky and blessed.

Over the years she cherished the trips she enjoyed with her two sisters and mother which took them to Hawaii, Los Angeles, The Canadian Rockies, Destin Florida, and the Great Smoky Mountains. Their laughter was contagious and the stories became legends as they relived these trips as many years passed.

She was a devoted member of her Sunday School class at Meadowood Baptist Church. Her faith in our Lord and Savior was the cornerstone of her life. She will be remembered as a gentle, quiet, soft spoken sweet spirit. Her kindness was felt by all she met.

Her children and grandchildren brought much love and joy into her life and she was especially thrilled at the birth of her great-granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth, who all affectionately knew her as “Vee Ver”.

The family wishes to thank her care givers at Oak Tree Manor as well as the friends she made during her time there.
