Onita Sullivan

Thyrza “Onita” Sullivan, 93 passed away peacefully at Diversicare Amory, December 6, 2025.

Onita was born on July 16, 1932, in Smithville, MS to John A Jones and Estella Frederick Jones. She attended school at Hatley, MS. Onita married Herschel Ray Sullivan in 1948. She shared a love for family, fishing, camping, and gardening with Herschel for 61 years until his death in 2009. Onita was an Amory Walmart associate for a number of years until her retirement. Prior to Walmart she was a longtime employee of Glenn Manufacturing until their closure.

Onita was an excellent cook. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. You never left her house hungry. She loved keeping her yard and house immaculate. Onita was a long-time active member of Trinity Baptist Church. Her faith, family and friends were important to Onita.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel, her parents, John A. Jones and Estella Jones and her brother and sister-in-law, Lendon and Afton Jones.

She is survived by her son, Danny R. Sullivan (Shirley), Amory, MS; daughter, Debra Saxon, Bay Springs, MS; grandchildren, Jason Sullivan (Virginia) Huntsville Al, John Sullivan, Kyle Henry, Redwood City, CA, Holly Swan (Gunter) Bay Springs, MS; great grandchildren, Evren, Ada and Jane Sullivan, and Harli Miller Cotten. Also, nephews, Kenny, Phil and Greg Jones.

The family would like to acknowledge Judy Hatcher, longtime friend and caregiver of Onita. We are also grateful to the staff of Diversicare Amory for the love and care they gave Onita.

Services will be Friday, December 12, 2025.Visitation from 1pm until 2pm at EE Pickle Funeral Home. A Graveside Service to follow at 2pm at the Masonic Cemetery in Amory, MS.
