Mary Elizabeth Cowley Wright

Smithville— Mary Elizabeth Cowley Wright, 90, passed away surrounded by her loved ones on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at her residence. Born on November 11, 1928 in Monroe County, she was a daughter of William Otto and Della Elizabeth Towery Cowley.

Mary graduated from Smithville High School with the Class of 1947. She married her sweetheart, Francis Denver “Fiddle” Wright, on April 18, 1947, the day she graduated. She worked as a seamstress with the Longnecker Garment Plant in Smithville for many years. She was a very talented seamstress. Mary was a faithful member of Smithville Baptist Church, and was very involved with her Sunday School class as well as her Senior Citizen Group. She also loved being a member of her swimming group at MUW.

Mary’s closest friends were her church friends, and they spent many hours cooking for others and visiting their friends in the hospital and nursing homes. She enjoyed providing delicious home cooked meals for her family and took great care to make everyone’s favorite dish. She also loved buying nice clothes for her family. Mary kept a clean home, and carefully tended her flower garden. She enjoyed canning vegetables. A few of her favorite things were fashion, interior design, and talking on her phone with her friends. Above all, Mary loved her family and enjoyed every moment spent with them. She will be greatly missed, but her family celebrates her home going to her Savior, Jesus Christ, and her heavenly home.

Mary is survived by her husband, Francis Denver “Fiddle” Wright, of Smithville; son, Ricky Wright, Smithville; grandchildren, DeeDee Jackson (John), Amory, Marie Rogers (Joe), Mantachie; great-grandchildren, Bo Rogers, Clara Beth Rogers, Jack Henry Rogers; and several nieces and nephews.
