Joy Burnell Johnson Scott

Smithville – Joy Burnell Johnson Scott, 96, began her new life in Heaven on Saturday, December 9, 2023. She was born on April 10, 1927, in Wynne Arkansas to the late Elmer Lee Bunch, Sr. and Lillie Florence Head Bunch.

Joy grew up in Monroe County and graduated from Wren High School in Mississippi. She went to work at an early age as a Machine Operator at True Temper in Amory, MS. Through the years she helped provide for her family. A woman with a great work ethic, she eventually retired from True Temper and went on to oversee the construction of the house of her dreams.

Joy married James Carlos Johnson on December 22, 1949 and together they were blessed with three children and over forty years of marriage. After he passed, she married Charles Scott on August 21, 1994 and they shared twenty years together. Joy had a wonderful family and was loved dearly through the years. She was a great mother, amazing grandmother and was very family orientated.

A member of First Baptist Church, her faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ always sustained her through hard times. She always cherished time well spent with family as well as with her favorite pet, her German Shepherd Princess. In her free time, she enjoyed collecting dolls and various antiques as well as listening to Gospel Music.
Joy’s presence will be missed yet her family knows she is with her Savior Jesus Christ. The memories made with her will be cherished forever.

The family would like to offer a special thanks to the staff at Oak Tree Assisted Living Center as they took such great care of Joy.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Eastman (Harold), Aberdeen, MS; sons, Michael Johnson (Rhonda), Greenwood Springs, MS, and Steve Johnson (Mary), Smithville; grandchildren, Brittney Barber (Zach), Andin Johnson, and David Johnson(Jessica); great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Pruitt, Hunter Johnson, Brody Barber, and Blaine Barber; sister, Barbara Lindoerfer (Dennis); brother, Thomas Bunch (Vickie); nieces and nephews, Pat, Tim, Joan, Fred, Tammy, Thomas, Mia, Greg, and Rod.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, James C. Johnson and Charles F. Scott; grandson, Chris Pruitt; brother, JR Bunch; and a niece, Susie Coleman.
