Homer "Hank" Hansel Hood

Homer "Hank" Hansel Hood, a dedicated family man and beloved member of the community, passed away on January 6, 2025, at the North Mississippi Medical Center, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on August 31, 1936, in Aberdeen, Mississippi to the late RC and Laverne Manual Hood. He spent his life cherishing his family and enjoying the simple pleasures that life had to offer.

Hank had a distinguished career that included 15 years with Frisco Railroad and another 15 years as a Road Supervisor with the Mississippi Department of Transportation. He also served as the Town of Smithville Alderman for 8 years. His work ethic and commitment to his professions were admirable, showcasing the values he instilled in his family. He attended Carolina School and believed in the importance of education and hard work.

Hank was cherished for his loving personality. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 68 years, Virginia Rye Hood, and a nurturing father to his children: Melissa Dupree, Leigh Skinner, Holly Cooley, and Randy Hood. As a grandfather, he found immense joy in watching his grandsons, Cal Dupree, Cam Skinner, Brody Skinner, Hank Skinner, Max Skinner, Tyler Hood, and Tucker Hood, as well as his granddaughters Cate Kennedy, Mallory Sewell, Martha Grace Cooley, and Ashley Skinner Gray engage in sports and other activities. Hank took great pride in raising his family and considered it one of his proudest accomplishments.

In addition to being a family man, Hank enjoyed leisure activities, particularly playing golf, fishing, hunting, and supporting his Mississippi State Bulldogs. These hobbies brought him much happiness and allowed him to connect with nature and friends alike. He was often seen smiling and sharing stories about his experiences on the golf course or recounting a successful fishing trip. His closest friends were Jimmy Dabbs and Bo and Judy Stevens.

He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, including JT, Lexie and Weston Gray, Barclay and Ollie Kennedy, and Zane and Rye Raines. Each of them carries forward the legacy of love and strength that Hank embodied.

Hank's life was also marked by sorrow, as he mourned the loss of his daughter, Holly Cooley, his father, R.C. Hood, and his mother Laverne Manual Hood among others. They are fondly remembered by all who knew them.

The visitation for Hank will be held on January 8, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at Smithville Baptist Church in Smithville, MS. His memory will live on through the countless lives he touched with his kindness and dedication to family. He will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
