Gloria T. Herring

Amory – Gloria Faye Thornton Herring, 89, passed away on Monday, November 5, 2018, at her residence in Amory. Born on July 6, 1929, in Monroe County, she was the daughter of the late Roger Walden Thornton and Ruby Laura Moon Thornton.

Gloria graduated from Becker High School in 1947. She married the love of her life, Iverson L. Herring and together they were blessed with two children. A loving and hardworking woman, Gloria raised her children while being a true helpmate to her husband by helping him run their businesses. She worked by her husband’s side until he passed away in 1994 and she continued to work 80% of her life in bookkeeping and dealing with the public. They had the first company to rent portable signs at Herring Sign Co., and the first company to operate a self-service gas station in Monroe County, Herrings Gas. They also had Herring Auto Parts Company and ran Herring Enterprises later in life, which currently rents homes in Monroe County. Even after retiring, she still managed properties and continued to buy gas for the gas stations they owned.

Gloria was a member of Greenbrier United Methodist Church when she lived in Becker. Later, she joined 1st Presbyterian Church when she moved to Amory. Gloria was passionate about her community, fairness to all people, and was a staunch Democrat. She had a strong heart for people and their rights. She got involved in politics to attempt to correct injustice and cruelty towards the less fortunate. She loved sharing stories with her family about growing up during the Depression and the lessons they learned through struggles. She was the Treasurer for Greenbrier Cemetery and she valued the importance of history. Her family said she was a history buff and they called her the “family record keeper” as she was her family’s Historian. One of her last projects was the restoration of the First Christian Church in Amory. She worked hard to get the building restored and with a group of other citizens the dream became a reality and they renamed the building “The Windows”.

Family meant the world to her and she was so generous to her family with the most prized possessions being her never ending love and wisdom. She attended school functions with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was involved with school activities and 4H projects. In her free time, she loved to garden and work with flowers. In Becker, she enjoyed working on her large yard. Her home was always immaculate and decorated beautifully. Gloria really enjoyed listening to swing music of the 40’s and 50’s. Dancing was something that she loved to do and she also enjoyed listening to instrumental music. Gloria had a true appreciation for old things, especially antique cars. She and her husband had fun restoring a 1941 Packard LeBaron.

A kind, giving, community involved woman, Gloria leaves behind a legacy of wonderful memories for her family and friends to treasure for a lifetime.
