Ms. Hathcote graduated from Smithville High School, where she was known not only for her academic diligence but also for her love of basketball, a sport she passionately played throughout her high school years. From an early age, Flora embraced hard work; she began her career at the age of 16 working in garment plants, contributing faithfully until her retirement in 1999. Even after retiring, her commitment to serving others continued as she took a position at Dollar General, where she worked attentively until May 2010.
Flora Mae was a woman who deeply enjoyed the company of others and had a zest for exploring the world around her. She loved traveling, thrifting, and attending country music concerts, activities that brought her joy and fulfillment. Her infectious enthusiasm for life made her presence a comfort and delight to all who knew her.
She was profoundly proud of her late husband, Elijah Franklin Hathcote, to whom she was married for 68 years. Their enduring marriage was a testament to their devotion and partnership. Equally, Flora treasured her family and celebrated the achievements of her children and grandchildren above all else.
Flora Mae is survived by her daughters, Joan (Travis) Robertson and Sandi Vaughan, continuing her legacy through their loving care. She also leaves behind five grandchildren: Jon (Donna Robertson), Chris (Bethany) Robertson, Scott (Yuki) Robertson, Sammy Ray Vaughan, and Angel Vaughan. The family circle extends to seven great-grandchildren: Calloway Prince, Chase Robertson, Garrett Robertson, Carsen Ashton, Cristin Robertson, Carley Robertson, and Elijah Robertson, each a living reminder of her enduring love and influence. She is also remembered fondly by a host of nieces and nephews who carry forward her memory.
Her closest friends, Judy Sims, Francis Reeves, Lana Jean Cook, Cody and Brantley, which she considered family, shared many moments of Flora’s joyful and social nature.
Flora Mae was preceded in death by her husband Elijah Franklin Hathcote, her parents James Fletcher Powell and Lessie Walker Powell, as well as her brothers Floyd and Frances Powell, and her sisters Faye Mason, Mildred Vines, and Lalia Moore.
Throughout her life, Flora Mae Hathcote embodied strength, kindness, and a genuine love for those around her. Her legacy is one of devotion to family and community, a true testament to a life well lived. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
