Ellis Ray Harris
Ellis Ray Harris, 85, passed away on March 27, 2024, at Baptist Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi and met his Savior face to face. He was born on October 13, 1938 in Monroe County, Mississippi to the late Albert Harris and Ethel West Harris.
Described as fun-loving and a perpetual jokester, Ellis cherished nothing more than being surrounded by his family. His spiritual anchor lay in his faith of God which was evident to others. He was a member of Wesley Chapel Church in Detroit, Alabama, where he enjoyed worshipping and studying with fellow Christians.
Though he obtained his education at the Former Oak Hill School in the Bethlehem Community, Ellis's professional journey led him to Butler and Company in Vernon, Alabama, where he worked as a dedicated truck driver. He was a great provider for his family.
Ellis found his greatest joy in the simplicity of life - riding his tractor, tending to his garden, and embracing the great outdoors. He was a proud former President of the Monroe County Shriners and was deeply involved in the Bethlehem Community, even helping raise funds for the Community Center and the Fire Department. Among his closest companions were Ray Blaylock and his fellow members at the Shriner Lodge, with whom he shared many cherished memories.
He liked country music and his favorite pastimes included riding his tractor through the fields and nurturing his garden, where he found peace and contentment.
His most significant accomplishment, however, was the love and care he devoted to his family. Ellis will be remembered for his infectious laughter, his love for his family, and his unwavering dedication to the causes he held dear. Though he may have departed this world, his legacy of love and laughter will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who knew and cherished him.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Mary Alice West Harris, whom he married on December 29, 1956, his daughters Frances Clements (Ronnie Taylor) of Smithville, and Rosie House of the Priestville Community in Mississippi. Ellis also leaves behind grandchildren, Ellis and Dallas Clements, and Jessie Carlson; as well as a sister, Laverne Cleveland from Kenosha, WI; and eleven adored great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Ellis was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Ethel West Harris, and a sister, Jody Taylor.
A graveside Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at 2:30 pm at New Hope Cemetery in Hatley, MS, with Bro. Steve Ford officiating and the Masons serving as pallbearers. Prior visitation will take place on Saturday at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory, MS, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana, honoring Ellis's commitment to service and community.
