Charles Hawkins

Charles Hawkins, born December 7, 1931, passed away on July 5, 2026, at the age of 94. His long and well-lived life leaves an indelible legacy cherished by all who knew him.

Charles devoted much of his professional life to public service. He served 23 years as an officer with the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission (TABC), where his outstanding commitment and skill earned him the role of Senior Agent. Known for his integrity, discipline, and deep sense of responsibility, Charles left a lasting mark on the agency and the communities he served.

Before his career with the TABC, Charles served his country proudly as a member of the United States Army. He was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division, 5th Regiment in Japan. His years in the military shaped his steadfast character and lifelong sense of duty and honor.

In all aspects of his life, Charles was guided by strong values and meaningful connections to others. He was a dedicated member of Trinity Baptist Church, where he drew spiritual strength and contributed to his community’s life. As a proud Mason, he upheld traditions of fellowship, charity, and moral uprightness.

Known affectionately by many as “Buster,” Charles possessed a distinctive presence and warmth. Those fortunate enough to cross his path would recall that he always wore his suspenders and, without fail, carried a Hershey chocolate bar in his pocket—a simple trademark that brought a smile to many faces. Among his closest companions was his dear friends Ricky and Suzy Chaney and Cathy Mitchell (“Mimmie”), whose steadfast friendship brightened his later years.

Charles’s family was central to his heart and legacy. He is survived by his loving daughter, Susan Hahn. His legacy also continues through his grandchildren: William Hahn, Robert Hahn, Karen Geiger, Debra Linn, Melinda Harbuck, and Charles Goff; 12 great grandchildren, and 14 great-great grandchildren. Each of them carries forward his wisdom, wit, and enduring spirit.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Florence Hawkins; his son, Charles Mabry Jr.; his mother, Genevieve Hawkins; his father, Charles Hawkins; a stepdaughter; and siblings. Their memories, like his, are held close by those who remain.

To honor and remember Charles Hawkins, visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on July 11, 2026, at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory, Mississippi. A Celebration of Life will follow from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. with his dear friend Bro. Jack Dauphin officiating. Burial to follow at Howell Annex in Athens. Pallbearers will be Mark Linn, Wayne Allen, David Davis, Nathaniel Davis, Jack Dauphin Jr., Seth Chaney, and Ricky Chaney.

Charles Hawkins’s life was one of service, devotion, and character, a legacy that will remain alive in the hearts of family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
