Charles J. Cummings

October 2, 1930 — January 23, 2021

Charles J. Cummings

Smithville – Charles J. Cummings, 90 , began his new life in heaven on Saturday, January 23, 2021. Born on October 2, 1930, in Smithville, he was a son of the late Troy and Leona Lann Cummings.

Charles grew up in Monroe county and attended Smithville schools. He went to work at an early age in the Garment Industry and worked for many years providing for his family. He then went to work with Sprint Boat manufacturing and later worked at a hardware store where he would install flooring. A man with a great work ethic, he never really stopped working. Later in life, he started a business from home where he would repair different things in his shop and he also helped maintain yards for different families over the years.

He was a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. God blessed him with four children, two sons and two daughters, as well as a loving wife, Normadine “Dene” Benton Cummings and her daughter. Charles was thankful to God for all his blessings and at a young age he was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. As a man, he attended both Pearce Chapel and Smithville Baptist Church. He loved Southern gospel and Bluegrass Gospel music. It didn’t matter which church he was visiting, Charles always loved the Lord and he had a strong faith in his guaranteed salvation through Christ Jesus.

Charles never met a stranger, was friendly and very talented with his hands. He believed in giving back and he was a former member of the Lion’s club as well as a prior Alderman with the Smithville Board of Alderman. Charles liked to work in his yard and just spend time outdoors. In his free time, he listened to the Country Boy Eddie show sometimes while building or working on different things in his workshop.

His legacy will live on in the hearts of his loved ones. They know that he is at peace, with his Savior, and that he is rejoicing with the angels now.

Left behind to treasure his memories are his wife, “Dene” Cummings, Smithville; daughters, Glenda Cummings Pearce, Fulton, Susan Reeves, (Harry), Smithville; son, Johnny Cummings, Amory; grandchildren, John Lance Cummings, Evergreen Community; Jason Young (Kelly), Virginia, Elizabeth Jackson (John), Parham Community, Marie Rogers (Joe), Mantachie; great-grandchildren, Collin and Breanna Young; Bo Howard Rogers, Clara Beth Rogers, and Jack Henry Rogers; sisters, Madine Webb, Irene Gregory, and Jean Kendrick; niece and nephews, Beth Webb Bryan, David and Don Brazil; Debbie Jean Chambley; Ricky and Ronnie Gregory; Mike Cummings; Terry Cummings, Doug & Wayne Webb.
