Dalton Eugene “Gene” Harris, 83, passed away on Tuesday, October 2, 2017 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, MS. Born on April 12, 1934 in Smithville, he was a son of the late Willie O. and Hazel T. Comer Harris. Gene attended Smithville Schools and was a member of Cason Baptist Church. He married Jimmie Hoots on December 4, 1954 and together they had 3 children. Gene was a simple man who loved his family, friends and all of his pets. He loved staying outdoors and enjoying nature. His closest friends were Don McCain, Pat Arinder and Jay Mitchell. Before becoming disabled, he was a die cast machinist for Cramco industries. In his spare time, he loved to listen to Country and Gospel music. He took pride in the trophies and awards that he received as a professional archer. He was able to teach his grandchildren and great-grandchildren the love of this sport. His love for archery will be remembered not only by his family but also his friends. Gene will be missed by all that knew and loved him. Gene is survived by his wife, Jimmie Hoots Harris; daughters, Gail Kemp (Chris), Mantachie, Virginia Faulkner (Benny), Greenwood Springs, Regina Dunn (Larry), Fulton; son, Stan Harris (Wendy), Hatley; sister, Linda Kay Riggan, Amory; grandchildren, Memory McAfee, Jacob Harris, Rozan Lindsey, Roman Cuevas, Jason, Brandy, and Matthew Faulkner; 9 great-grandchildren; 7 nieces and nephews; special friends, Pat Arinder, Don McCain, and Jay Mitchell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bo Harris and a sister, Mary Plaxico. A celebration of life service for Gene will be at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, October 5, 2017 at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home with Reverend Don McCain and Reverend Jimmy Moore officiating. Burial will follow in New Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Pat Arinder, Jay Mitchell; Chris and Donnie Kemp; Joey and Brandon Christopher. His grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be on Wednesday evening, October 4, 2017 from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Monroe County Humane Society and the American Cancer Society.
